Student Leadership

Student Leadership in the UP

In Upper Primary, we believe that every child has the potential to be a leader, both at home and at school. Research shows that engaging in student leadership roles not only boosts self-esteem but also fosters essential life skills like communication, responsibility, and problem-solving. As students explore new interests and passions, they build their leadership abilities and self-confidence.

To nurture this growth, we offer four distinct leadership groups that empower students to develop as leaders and individuals. These groups promote collaboration, resilience, and active participation, enabling our students to recognize and embrace their potential as leaders in all aspects of their lives. It is also our belief that a student does not need to be in a group to be a leader, everyone can lead in different ways. The groups are just one way Upper Primary students can further develop their leadership skills.

UP Student Leadership Mission:

Upper Primary Student Leaders focus on the needs of others and collaborate to make our school and community better. We model integrity and resilience. We are caring and empathetic while we empower each member to actively listen, take initiative, and use our student voices to make a positive impact in our classrooms and beyond.

Student Leader Groups

Green Dragons:

The Green Dragons aim to foster environmental stewardship and sustainability through experiential learning in the UP Farm, lead impactful community projects, and instill a profound sense of environmental awareness and responsibility in all members.

Student Council:

UP Student Council fosters a community where inquiry drives learning, compassion guides our actions, and global understanding shapes our perspectives. We strive to create an inclusive environment where every student feels seen, heard, and valued. We our student voice, we make a positive impact within our school and beyond.

Student Digital Leadership Team (SDLT):

Students learn about technology, help others with technology, and lead with technology use.

Process for Student Leadership Groups

All Upper Primary students can apply to join one of the student leadership groups. At the beginning of the year, interested students must complete a project to submit with their application. The teacher advisors of each leadership group will review all applications and projects for selection. Students selected must sign and have their parents or caregivers sign a commitment statement as a member of the group.

Student Ambassadors:

Grade 5 students serve as Student Ambassadors. They are chosen by previous teachers to represent the Upper Primary to prospective students and their families throughout the admissions process by giving tours, answering questions, and sharing their experiences in the Upper Primary.
